HIKING IN SILVERTHORNE

The Blue River Trail is Silverthorne’s link to the county-wide paved trail system that spans from Keystone to Glenwood Springs. The trail is a paved 10’ wide ADA accessible trail that is open to non-motorized use. Silverthorne’s path system spans from the Dillon Dam to the Silverthorne Elementary School. However, current segments already allow users to travel all the way from the Dam to the school without crossing or using highway 9 (Blue River Parkway).

The Willow Creek Highlands Trail Head is located at the top of Willowbrook Road. The Willow Creek trail is a half mile and leads hikers into the White River National Forest trail system. Limited public parking is available at the trail head.

The Angler Mountain Ranch Trail Head is approximately 2.5 miles in length and climbs 1,200 vertical feet from the valley floor where it meets the Ptarmigan trail. Hikers can continue on an additional 2,500 feet in elevation and approximately 3.5 miles to reach the Ptarmigan Peak at an elevation of 12,498 feet.

The Ptarmigan Trail climbs steadily through various ecosystems including sagebrush meadow, lodgepole pine, aspen, spruce-fir, and alpine tundra —the land above the trees. While thick forest envelops the trail the first 4 miles, a few open spaces provide great views of the Gore Range or the lower Blue River valley. As you hike above tree line, keep your eyes open on the north ridge for the resident elk herd. The long hike is rewarded by beautiful vistas from the top, including four 14,000-foot peaks, much of the craggy Gore Range, the Tenmile Range, and Dillon Reservoir. This is hunting area so be wary of hunters. There are shorter versions of this trail, so don’t feel the need to hike to the top.

This historic steakhouse has been in business since 1863! The Mint was actually moved to Silverthorne when they were building the Dillon Dam, since the original location was right in the heart of where Lake Dillon sits today. When you are ready to eat, you get to choose your steak or seafood, then cook it yourself to your exact liking over the lava rock grill. The grill produces 1100 degree fire which quickly sears the meat to lock it the juices and flavors. All entrees come with the all-you-can-eat salad bar, and you can choose a la carte sides, as well.
